One of my biggest problems is tempo – swing speed. I’m just too fast. I seem to rush my swing and we all know that leads to poor shots. A lot of golfers have the same problem.  

I have tried to fix my tempo a lot of different ways. Once, I even took a metronome (one of those things beginning music learners use to tick out a consistent beat) to the driving range and put it on the mat beside me (had to find a mat off to the side so nobody else would hear it). That didn’t work at all. It would have worked but I couldn’t hear the darn thing.

 I came across an ad for the SWINGHAT by accident. I read about it and it made sense. I am very skeptical about so-called “swing improvement items”. Some of the things work, a few work very well but many are just plain crummy.

2. It also has a spine angle motion detector. I consider this a “bonus” feature but it really is important. If you do not maintain a steady spine angle, your swing will be inconsistent and your shot accuracy not at all predictable

OK – here’s the problem
But maybe it’s not as bad as I think

 

The “brain” of the Swinghat sits on top. Of course, at the practice range I think everybody is looking at me wondering what sort of gimmick I’m trying. I get really self-conscious. And the ear piece hanging down and stuck in my ear so I can hear the Swinghat doesn’t help. That is why my partner Dan said when I put it on the first time, “Well, where you off to today beanie-buzzer boy.” Did I ever mention sometimes Dan is just a real pain in the…neck.

But at the range I don’t think anybody noticed it. At least nobody looked like they did. And if they did, it’s pretty easy to figure out it probably is just a tempo device – so what’s the big deal.

And what made it easier for me to put it on is the youngsters from the local college golf team use our practice range (gosh, those kids are good!). Over half of them have their iPods or mp3 players on their belts with the wires going to their ear pieces. So I figure, they hit it long and straight and they have ear buds stuck in their ears and IPods on their belts so it’s no big deal. Besides, the Swinghat has helped my tempo and my game so much I now put it on and don’t give it a second thought. It’s that good.
